Empowering Students to Get Unstuck Through COIL

May 8, 2025

On May 7, 2025, faculty, staff, and students of Samar State University (SSU) actively participated in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) session hosted by Tra Vinh University (TVU), in partnership with Southern Leyte State University (SLSU). The virtual event, held via Zoom, brought together seventy-four (74) participants from four institutions: Tra Vinh University, Southern Leyte State University, Samar State University, and Palompon Institute of Technology.

The session featured Dr. Darren Hannah as the speaker, who delivered an inspiring talk titled “Getting Unstuck: A Reflective Guide for Students to Balance Study, Life, and Growth.” Dr. Hannah offered participants a set of practical strategies and reflective techniques aimed at helping students navigate personal and academic challenges. His insights emphasized clarity, emotional balance, and sustainable motivation as key components of student success.

To encourage self-awareness and engagement, Dr. Hannah opened the session with a reflective exercise. Participants were invited to think about moments when they felt overwhelmed or stuck, and to jot down these experiences in response to prompts shown on-screen. This interactive approach set the tone for a highly personal and thought-provoking discussion.

The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A segment, where participants exchanged perspectives and sought advice on applying the session’s insights to their own contexts. The event reinforced the value of international academic collaboration in promoting student well-being and personal growth across cultures.

Through initiatives like COIL, SSU continues to strengthen its commitment to global learning and student development.
