The Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net) once again brought together international relations officers and administrative staff in a meaningful convergence during the ATU-Net International Staff Week 2025, held on September 10–12, 2025, at Pampanga State University (formerly Don Honorio Ventura State University). With the theme “Harmonizing International Efforts in the Region through Holistic Staff Capacity Building,” the event gathered around fifty (50) participants from universities across Asia, joined by representatives from the host institution. Samar State University (SSU) was proudly represented by Dr. Elmer A. Irene, Director for International Affairs, and Mr. Mark Brian G. Quemaño, Administrative Staff of the Office of International Affairs.
The program opened with a lively welcome parade and a cultural presentation from Pampanga State University, setting the tone of celebration and hospitality. Participants were formally greeted with inspiring messages from the leaders of the host institution. In his remarks, University President Dr. Enrique G. Baking reminded participants to “think outside the box, to be limitless,” a message that resonated deeply and framed the spirit of the gathering. The first keynote address, delivered on behalf of CHEDRO III Regional Director Dr. Lora L. Yusi, introduced the holistic approach to internationalization and staff capacity building. The day continued with insightful panel discussions that explored mobility and exchanges, research collaboration, and micro-credentials as pathways for professional growth. Perspectives varied but shared a common thread: that strong partnerships, transformative experiences, and institutional support are essential for internationalization to thrive. Dr. Irene actively engaged in the conversations, sharing how research and collaboration can serve as powerful platforms to strengthen the identity and global presence of universities.
The second day pushed participants further into collaboration through workshops on crafting mobility exchanges and formulating research topics. A keynote message from Dr. Ain Naadia binti Mazlan of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia emphasized visibility, global presence, and ranking as key elements of sustainable international engagement. Later, a panel discussion on intercultural competence highlighted the importance of adaptability, with Dr. Irene reflecting on his own experiences studying in Japan as a testament to the value of cultural immersion. That evening, the mood shifted from academic exchanges to a celebration of cultures as the participants enjoyed a dinner and cultural presentation, where groups showcased performances that reflected their creativity, camaraderie, and shared appreciation for diversity.
The final day was devoted to presenting the outputs of the group workshops, where participants demonstrated the collaborative projects they had envisioned during the week. These presentations not only reflected academic and professional growth but also the bonds and friendships formed across institutions and countries. The closing ceremony was filled with heartfelt words and a sense of fulfillment, with many participants exchanging goodbyes yet carrying with them the promise of future collaboration.
For the delegates from Samar State University, the experience was both rewarding and transformative. Dr. Irene saw the event as an opportunity to deepen institutional linkages, while Mr. Quemaño, attending his first international staff week, described it as an eye-opening journey that broadened his understanding of the vital role in the international affairs offices play in shaping global education. As the theme of the event suggests, the ATU-Net International Staff Week was not merely a gathering of professionals; it was a living example of “harmonizing international efforts in the region through holistic staff capacity building.” It was not just a conference, but also a journey of learning, sharing, and connecting—one that leaves lasting impressions and ignites greater possibilities for collaboration across borders.
