SSU Innovation Shines at Japan Design, Idea & Invention Expo 2025

Date: August 14, 2025

Samar State University (SSU) proudly marked a new milestone on the international stage when Engr. Nikko Ardel P. Floretes, faculty member of the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department, brought home gold from the Japan Design, Idea & Invention Expo (JDIE) 2025 held on July 5–6 in Tokyo, Japan.

The prestigious event, organized by the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), gathered inventors, researchers, and industry leaders from across the globe to showcase groundbreaking ideas and cutting-edge technologies. Participants hailed from countries such as Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand, making the expo a hub for innovation and collaboration.

Engr. Floretes represented the Philippines and SSU with his invention CAGE (Controlled Acoustic Generation for Enticing Mud Crabs)—a unique technology that uses modified sound to attract mud crabs. During his presentation, he played a video showing a crab approaching a speaker, capturing the judges’ and audience’s attention. The reactions of the audience were priceless and many expressed curiosity and eagerness to learn how this innovation could transform crab farming.

On the second day, anticipation filled the hall during the awarding ceremony. To his delight, Engr. Floretes received both the Gold Medal and the Leading Innovation Award, distinguishing his work as the most innovative entry of the entire competition. A panel member even personally congratulated him, praising the ingenuity of using sound for aquaculture.

The success of CAGE at JDIE 2025 not only highlights SSU’s growing presence in global innovation but also serves as an inspiration for Filipino inventors to dream big and compete internationally.
