Samar State University hosted Tra Vinh University’s Deputy Head of Aquaculture Department, Dr. Vo Thi Tuyet Minh and the Director of Center for Aquaculture Research, MSc. Diep Thanh Toan, both Faculty of Agriculture and Aquaculture School, for a two-day ‘Seminar on Aquaculture & Emerging Technology and Techniques for Collaborative Research’. This event aims to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and strengthen the partnership between both universities.
The first day of the seminar, April 29 (24), unfolded at the Research and Innovation Center Audio Visual Room, Samar State University. Dr. Minh enlightened the participants with her discussion on ‘Introduction about Agriculture and Aquaculture School’ and ‘Integrated Disease Prevention in Aquaculture’. Among the attendees were directors of SSU’s centers, researchers, as well as students pursuing Master in Fishery Technology (MFT) and Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (BSFi).
Continuing the momentum on April 30 (24), the 2nd day of the seminar saw Dr. Minh delve deeper into the realm of aquaculture with her discussion on ‘Sharing Research Topics and Orientation Research Topics of Aquaculture Department’. Mr. Toan complemented this with his insights on ‘Applying Biofloc Technology on Integrated Giant Freshwater Prawns and Rice Fields System at the Nursery Stage’. The day further flourished with contributions from Mr. Renato C. Dioction, Director of the Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, who shared expertise on Aquasilviculture and Fattening of Mangrove Crab (Alimango), and Ms. Diana Shane A. Balindo, Director of the Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Research and Development (CFARRD), who introduced CFARRD’s ongoing research endeavors. Engr. Walvies Mc Alcos also enriched the dialogue with updates on the research and extension activities of the Center for Engineering, Science, and Technology Innovation (CESTI). Concluding the session, Ms. Christine Capidos extended an invitation to Tra Vinh University for the upcoming iPOVCON 2024, fostering prospects for future collaborations and engagements.
Transitioning from the seminar halls to hands-on exploration, on May 1 (24), Dr. Minh and Mr. Toan, accompanied by Mr. Pedro S. Cabrales, International Student Exchange Coordinator, and Mr. Mark Brian G. Quemaño, Office of International Affairs Staff, embarked on a visit to Eastern Visayas Center for Crustacean Research and Development (EVCRD) and hatchery laboratories at Mercedes Campus. They were graciously welcomed by Mr. Renato C. Diocton, Director for EVCRD. Their quest for knowledge didn’t end there; on May 2 (24), they further expanded their horizons with a visit to the picturesque Payao Mangroves, immersing themselves in the wonders of nature and gaining valuable insights into coastal ecosystems.
Through this collaborative seminar and subsequent explorations, both institutions have not only expanded their intellectual horizons but have also laid the groundwork for fruitful partnerships and endeavors in the realm of aquaculture research and education. Such initiatives serve as a testament to the power of collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and fostering sustainable development.
