Makati, Metro Manila —The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Skills for Prosperity Philippines Programme conducted its culmination program of TESDA-ILO Pilot projects in Region VII and VIII. The event, held at the Yuchengco Museum in Makati, Metro Manila on September 25 (23), brought together key stakeholders in skills development and vocational education. Dr. Elmer A. Irene, SSU Director for International Affairs, participated as one of the panelists in the programme.
The Skills for Prosperity Programme in the Philippines, backed by the ILO and the United Kingdom government, focuses on enhancing skills development and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Driven by collaboration with governmental agencies, employers’ organizations, and trade unions, its primary emphasis is the revitalization of the skills sector.
Dr. Irene’s expertise contributed to discussions on Lifelong Pilot Initiatives for the Visayas Region, emphasizing lifelong learning and skill development. This event highlighted Samar State University’s commitment to national skills and education development.
Furthermore, the involvement of Samar State University (SSU) in the Skills for Prosperity Programme was particularly noteworthy. Through its innovative “Smarter Basey” program, SSU’s Basey Campus is being groomed to serve as a community college, dedicated to fostering skills and education within the community. In partnership with TESDA and Banig Inc, SSU was recognized as one of the key stakeholders in this endeavor.
SSU Basey has responded to this call for collaboration by actively crafting competencies and standards for lifelong learning materials tailored to the needs of Banig weavers in Basey. This initiative is set to empower local artisans with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their craft while preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Banig weaving.
The Yuchengco Museum was the venue for this successful culmination programme, which included an exhibit demonstrating the achievements of the Skills for Prosperity Programme. The ILO’s Skills for Prosperity Philippines Programme, along with the proactive involvement of institutions like Samar State University, is paving the way for the future of skills development in the country, with dedicated individuals and organizations playing pivotal roles.
The future of education and workforce readiness in the Philippines looks promising, thanks to such collaborations and initiatives, which are not only enhancing skills development but also fostering community growth and preserving traditional crafts and culture.
