SSU Celebrates 56th ASEAN Anniversary with Unity and Diversity

CATBALOGAN CITY – Samar State University (SSU) came together in a vibrant display of unity and diversity to mark the 56th ASEAN Celebration. The event was organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and carried the theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.”

The university commenced the day with a solemn flag-raising ceremony, where Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, the University President, key officials, faculty, staff, students, and alumni adorned traditional attire from various ASEAN member countries. The ceremony was held at 07:30 in the morning on the university grounds.

The festivities continued as participants joined the 2023 CHED ASEAN Kick-Off Ceremony virtually via ZOOM. The ceremony included captivating performances, including an interfaith prayer, the “Entrance of Colors” led by the University of the Philippines Rayadillo, and singing of the Philippine National Anthem, ASEAN Hymn, and CHED Hymn by the AFMS Chorale.

Messages from esteemed guests underscored the importance of ASEAN’s unity and education. Mr. Daniel R. Espiritu from the Department of Foreign Affairs emphasized amplifying ASEAN youth voices. Miss Rodora Toralde Babaran, from the Directorate ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Department, highlighted the role of education in strengthening regional bonds. Dr. Romyen Kosaikanont from SEAMEO RIHED, Bangkok, Thailand, shared insights on harmonizing higher education and fostering regional collaboration.

The AFMS Chorale’s enchanting performance of the Indonesian song “Tanah Airku” resonated deeply, transcending borders and languages, and showcasing the unifying power of music.

CHED Chairman J. Prospero “Popoy” E. De Vera’s closing remarks echoed unity in diversity. He announced plans for a future songwriting contest using ASEAN languages to promote understanding and appreciation of the region’s rich cultures.

The event transitioned to CHED Regional Office VIII (CHEDRO VIII), where Mr. Emmanuel Antonio A. Lim, Education Supervisor II, highlighted this year’s theme as a beacon of stability amid challenges. The office showcased plans to promote ASEAN values and engage Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).

Universities proudly displayed their assigned ASEAN country’s traditional attire, with SSU showcasing Malaysian attire to underscore their commitment to CHEDRO VIII’s vision.

The day’s celebration demonstrated how diversity and unity thrive in ASEAN. SSU’s participation showcased their dedication to growth, understanding, and collaborative progress in the region.
