ZHENGZHOU, CHINA – The Intercontinental Collegiate Basketball Tournament, held at SIAS University in Zhengzhou, China, from September 16 to 23, 2023, was an exhilarating experience for Samar State University (SSU). It marked a significant milestone in the institution’s international academic and athletic collaboration. Through this tournament, SSU was able to mobilized across national borders nine (9) student athletes of the university to engage in not only cultural exchange but also sports development.
On the first day, September 16, 2023, the SSU Deers with other other participating Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) across the globe prepared themselves for the upcoming basketball matches. The university’s delegation familiarize themselves with the court and pre-strateegize their approach to the games agaist opposing teams who had the height disadvantage. Moreover, they were toured to the different facilities of the host university.
On the second day of the tournament, September 17, 2023, the SSU Deers embarked on a thrilling journey, securing a resounding victory over SIAS University Team 3. With a final score of 80-57, their exceptional teamwork, skill, and determination left their opponents in awe. From the tip-off to the final buzzer, the Deers maintained control of the game. Dr. Randy E. Pacadaljen, the head coach, praised the team’s performance, while Dr. Elmer A. Irene, Director for International Affairs, commended their efforts in promoting international goodwill through sports. Under the leadership of University President Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso, the SSU Deers embarked on their first international venture as ambassadors of sportsmanship and skill. On the evening of the same day, SSU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SIAS University. The MOU signing was attended by SSU key officials, including Dr. Marilyn D. Cardoso (University President), Dr. Elmer A. Irene (Director for International Affairs), and Dr. Randy E. Pacadaljen (Director for Sports Development, Culture, and the Arts Program, together with SIAS University officials, including Dr. Shawn Chen (Founder and Chairman of the Board in SIAS University), and Mr. Julian Yue. The MOU, laid the foundation for academic collaboration, enabling the exchange of scholars, students, academic information, joint supervision, and the establishment of training programs. Through the five-year partnership with SIAS University, SSU further solidies its global reach and commitmment in becoming a world-class university.
SSU’s Varsity Team continued their winning streak, holding off Sias University Team 2 with a decisive score of 81-28 durin their second game on September 18, 2023. With nine players showcasing their best tactics on the court, the Deers advanced to Game 3, where they faced the University of Saint Joseph Macao, China, on September 19, 2023. The SSU Deers continued their dominant performance, overwhelming the University of Saint Joseph Macao, China, with a stunning score of 120-17. Their speed, endurance, and chemistry left spectators in awe. With this remarkable victory, they secured their third consecutive win in the tournament, setting their sights on Game 4 against Panpacific University Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, Philippines.
During their fourth game on September 20, 2023, the SSU Deers triumphed over the Panpacific University Gritty Sharks with a final score of 94-86. With an impressive record of 4-0, the Deers solidified their position as the team to beat. Their next challenge awaited in Game 5 against Sias University Team 1, who had the homecourt advantage. The Deers were eager to maintain their winning streak. With a flawless 5-0 record, the SSU Dexterous Deers culminated their journey in the Intercontinental Collegiate Basketball Tournament as champions on September 22, 2023. They outgunned Sias University Team 1 with a final score of 106-95, sealing their dominance in the tournament.
As a perfect testament to SSU’s dedication to academic excellence and sportsmanship, the MOU with SIAS University and the Deers’ remarkable performance in the tournament have strengthened the university’s global presence and its mission to become a world-class institution.
Additionally, the SSU Deers made the most of their time in China, exploring the vicinity of SIAS University, experiencing the thrill of bowling at the university’s bowling alley, savoring authentic Chinese cuisine, and on their last day in Zhengzhou, China, September 23 (23), visiting the breath taking Shaolin Temple. These experiences created lasting memories beyond the basketball court, enriching the cultural exchange that took place during their stay.
